At ISPOR 2025 in Montreal, PurpleLab presented a research poster titled “Trends in Attainment of the Kidney Health Evaluation for Patients with Diabetes Measure among Insured Individuals in the US, 2021-2024”.
The study, conducted by Stephan Dunning, MBA, MS, Douglas Londono, PhD, Yeison Ortiz, BS, Anna Wang, PhD, Nathan Markward, PhD, MPH, and Steven Emrick, BS, examined trends in the attainment of the Kidney Health Evaluation (KHE) clinical quality measure among insured patients with diabetes in the US.
Study overview:
- Identified diabetic patients aged 18-85 with at least one outpatient visit between 2021 and 2024 using PurpleLab® CLEART™ Claims.
- Calculated proportions of patients receiving a full KHE overall and stratified results by patient characteristics, including age group, gender, race, ethnicity, region, marital status, and education.
Key findings:
- Overall KHE attainment remained stable from 2021 to 2024, ranging from 57.5% to 58.4%.
- Lowest KHE attainment was among the 18-25 age group (51%-53%), while the 45-64 age group had the highest (55%-61%).
- Asian patients showed the highest attainment (66%-68%), and Black/AA patients had the lowest (54%-56%).
- Patients residing in the South had lower attainment (50%-52%) compared to those in the West (64%-66%).
The analysis highlights that while KHE attainment is relatively high for a new measure, significant disparities exist across various patient groups, suggesting opportunities for health equity improvement.
