3 Ways to Level Up an NPI list

Maybe you’ve been there: your client sends you a list of NPIs they want to target. So you’re thinking, how do I make sure my client sees value in what I do and doesn’t just see me as a button pusher? 

Well here are three ways to break out of the button pusher box and offer true value:

  1. Clean up the list of NPIs. Have they included providers who are treating low volumes of patients for the target condition? What about specialties unrelated to the core condition?  Chances are their list will include physicians who aren’t treating in high volumes or specialists who may not be their primary targets. In that case, you’ll want to compare the NPI list you have to volumetric data for the list of providers as well as a list of providers that do treat for the core condition. Remove any NPIs who are treating at lower volumes or associated with extraneous specialties.
  2. Expand the NPI list. In addition to removing noise, you’ll also want to make sure the list contains ALL of the relevant providers that are treating a condition. This may include high volume HCPs referring for your brand’s indications, nurse practitioners and physicians assistants. Make sure you’re comparing your target list to a verified provider list.
  3. Create a consumer targeting strategy. Use the cleaned up and expanded lists you created in 1 and 2 above to make sure that your client is targeting both the providers in the NPI list as well as a deterministic audience of the patients those providers are treating. This creates a holistic targeting strategy across the two groups and can ensure that messaging is cohesive.
